Yes, they churn a new one out every year.
Yes, each new installment isn’t much different than the previous one.
Does it matter to me, or the other millions of people that shell out their cash each November? No.
To quote Brian Altano of IGN, I don’t care if a game is the same every year. Pizza is the same every time you buy it. When given a choice, I’m not buying the bad pizza. I’m ordering the good stuff. Who wouldn’t? I know what I’m getting with the good pizza, and I know that I’m going to enjoy the hell out of it.
The Call of Duty series is the Ray’s Famous Pizza of the gaming world. Sure, it may be overhyped, but when you get down to it, and try it, it’s excellent. Every edition is. The graphics are nothing less than top-notch, the campaigns are always bombastic, and the multiplayer provides a customizable adrenaline rush not quite matched by shooters of its kind.
Of course, not all games are created equally, so let’s examine which toppings are on each of these slices (I promise that I’m done with that now, seriously). I’m going to rank the main installments of the series in the Create-A-Class era, which consists of the games from 2007-2013. I’ve played Call of Duty 2 and Call of Duty 3, and they are well-made games, but they are a different animal from the games in the ‘blockbuster’ era of the series. Let’s begin.
